Mr Jack Liu, writing in a weekly magazine began by chance to write about Haut Horlogerie, he has since accumulated 15 years as a horological journalist. Today he is the Editor in Chief of International Wrist Watch Taiwan

1. Describe briefly your childhood.

I am very lucky to grow up in an ordinary family. My parents were able to buy the toys I wanted and encouraged me to do what I wanted to do so that I have an open mind to learn new things.

2. As a child did you have any driving ambition?

I was dreamt of becoming a scientist when I was a little boy, maybe I love to study some interesting things I don’t understand. When I grew up, I still love exploring new things then I decide to become a journalist.

3. What is your first significant memory as a child?

When I got my first watch from my dad, it was a Rado. At that time I just don’t understand why the anchor of the logo could spin. I loved to watch it spin all the time when I was in school. 

4. Have you ever had another profession?

I was a semi-professional basketball player in the college and also I’m a good singer.

5. What made you decide to go in the direction you are currently in?

My first job was in a weekly magazine, by chance I was responded for writing news of Haut Horlogerie. Then after a few transition of company, luckily now I’m still in the same industry.

6. What’s the worst job you’ve had to do?

My worst job was in a newspaper, I responded for political news at that time. It was really boring.

7. What’s been the hardest moment in your life so far, and how did you overcome it?

My hardest moment was when I was working for a newspaper. Just because the field was not what I love and I can’t write a great report when I was a rookie in that field. I really struggled to build connections in ocean deep political parties.

8. Who has had the strongest influence on you?

My supervisor had a great influence on me when I worked for a newspaper. She taught me to get answers from the interview before I start writing a report, even if I already knew what people are gonna say.

9. What are you most proud of?

I already visit 99% watch manufacturer in Switzerland.

10. What advice would you give to a 20 something someone thinking of taking a similar path as you?

Ask as many questions as possible to professionals, read as many relative articles as you can before you write a report.

11. Name three things on your bucket list.

Travel around all big cities in the world. 

Witness ten greatest architects in the world.

Watch an NBA playoffs basketball game on the first-row seat.

12. Where do you think the watch industry is going to be in 10 years time?

All entry and mid-level price mechanical watch will replace by smartwatches with a holographic interface. Mechanical watches will truly become an art.
